I am quickly approaching the two year anniversary of my newly-“re”found singlehood, and feel like I am finally in a place where I can think about dating again. I tackled my relationship fears early on, regrouped on my own, got my life together, and have really embraced being single. There are a lot of aspects of being on my own that I really do enjoy, especially after so many years as a couple. I make my own decisions, I don’t rely so much on second opinions, and I can hog the whole bed at night. But at the same time, I am ready for companionship from someone. Someone who makes me laugh. Someone to go to dinner or the movies with. Someone to have grown up conversations with, to travel with, and to let into my life again. I tried my hand at dating early on in the divorce process.

It’s my first book review of ! Ten Blind Dates isn’t the greatest read ever, and I probably won’t remember it in a couple of weeks. But it’s.
Remember Me. About This Book:. Sophie wants one thing for Christmas-a little freedom from her overprotective parents. So when they decide to spend Christmas in South Louisiana with her very pregnant older sister, Sophie is looking forward to some much needed private read: make-out time with her long-term boyfriend, Griffin. Except it turns out that Griffin wants a little freedom from their relationship. Heartbroken, Sophie flees to her grandparents’ house, where the rest of her boisterous extended family is gathered for the holiday.
That’s when her nonna devises a not so brilliant plan: Over the next ten days, Sophie will be set up on ten different blind dates by different family members. Like her sweet cousin Sara, who sets her up with a hot guy at an exclusive underground party. Or her crazy aunt Patrice, who signs Sophie up for a lead role in a living nativity. With a boy who barely reaches her shoulder.
And a screaming baby.

I received a call some time ago from a childhood friend who lived in Denver, telling me she had a really great guy for me to meet. He had grown up in Los Angeles and was going to be back in L. I was less than enthused. A guy who lived in Denver? What good would that do me? I was living in L. He never called. I was actually relieved. Then I got a call from him on the Fourth of July.
He wanted to get together that night. Like, I was just sitting around with nothing better to do than wait for his call? Instead, we made plans to get together for dinner that Sunday evening, even though, as a real estate agent, I typically work on Sundays.
And everyone knows what happens when a moving car hits a bump in the road at full speed. The release format split the difference between the addictive hook of a binge and the nail-biting suspense of a weekly rollout.

Netflix’s new dating show has a unique premise — singles meet and get engaged without ever seeing each other face-to-face — but it’s also uniquely depressing. After 10 days, they have a choice: Get engaged, or get the hell out of Dodge. For the first handful of episodes, Love Is Blind does feel like something relatively new. And because none of the participants are actually blind, one woman must deal with the fact that she is low-key repulsed by the man she agreed to marry.
The good people at Kinetic Content — producers of Love Is Blind , Marriage at First Sight , and a series called I kid you not The Spouse House — are adept at finding people who are compellingly complex and also willing to put their need for attention above their own dignity. Netflix plans to parcel out the episodes 1 through 5 will hit on Feb.
Still, there is something about Love Is Blind that feels dark, even depressing. All dating shows are built on the universal desire to find a quick fix for the inescapable burden of human isolation — but at least with The Bachelor or Love Island the stakes are pleasingly low. Even if those relationships implode, it just means an Instagram model will suffer temporary embarrassment in exchange for , new followers. On Love is Blind , even the silly moments are shot through with an undercurrent of sadness.
The bachelorette parties are particularly bleak, as two women get messily, distressingly drunk in an effort to avoid their very valid doubts about marrying a stranger. And yet…I watched every episode. Call it a guilty displeasure.

Within days, participants form bonds deep enough to prompt marriage proposals, and the newly engaged couples finally meet in the flesh. But the show ultimately contradicts its own disingenuous premise—especially in the finale. No matchup captures the Love Is Blind ethos more neatly than the fan favorites , a year-old scientist named Cameron Hamilton, who is white, and a year-old content creator named Lauren Speed, who is black. In the first episode, the two trade easy banter from their pods, their conversations gradually growing more serious.
Throughout the season, Lauren, who admits she has never dated a nonblack man, is surprised by how readily she fell for—and agreed to marry—Cameron. Read: Love in the age of reality television. Lauren and Cameron indeed make an easy couple to root for. Cameron, who has dated a black woman before, tells Lauren that he knows their children will be perceived as black and face racism as a result of it. The revelation came after the two had left their pod-dating phase, when they were meant to be enjoying an engagement-moon in Mexico. Read: A Netflix show that captures the surrealism of modern romance. Love Is Blind never meaningfully acknowledges one obvious structural flaw in its experiment: Racial markers, and other signifiers of social status, can be picked up during telephone conversations too.
